Kathy and Ken Dunlap

Although Ken Dunlap had been working with wood for years, it wasn't until 1987 he was introduced to wood turning by his wife Kathy, when she bought a shopsmith and they both attended the Shopsmith School of Woodturning.  When he was contemplating retirement as a nuclear mechanical maintenance supervisor Ken realized he needed to be an accomplished woodturner by utilizing books, videos, and hands on workshops. Wanting to go beyond turning functional items and working to Gallery quality and design, he attended workshops with premier master turners of our times (Ray Key (boxes & bowls), Andre’ Martel (end grain lamps), Jonathan Nickelson (range rider woodhats), etc.).  Professionally, Ken is a member of the American Association of Woodturners and the Carolina Mountain Woodturners.

"I have been working with wood for over 45 years and now have the opportunity to work full time with one of five wood lathes in my studio. It has been my lifelong ambition to become a professional wood artist and wood designer utilizing the versatility of wood as a medium."

Scott OlsonScott Olson

Self-taught furniture maker Scott Olson designs and builds usable furniture and accessories, from small keeping boxes to large cabinets. Employing traditional joinery and methods, he primarily uses domestic woods and sometimes uses exotic woods from managed sources. He often uses finishes that let the wood character show, but also utilizes color in his pieces in the form of paint, dyes or non-wood materials such as glass, metal, and tile.

"I particularly enjoy the process of design and making objects. Furniture making is my way of expression the same as writing or acting is to another. I particularly like the probability that my furniture will outlive me, that it may be handed down through generations. Furniture is part of the lasting record of a societies beliefs and values. I hope mine will be looked on as worthwhile to that record."

Bobby PhillipsBobby Phillips

Bobby Phillips, a laid back native of Mitchell County, North Carolina has been turning wood since 1988. Since retiring in 1989, he says that turning has become almost a full time activity. Bobby's work consists of several types of vases (usually classical shapes) as well as treenware --bowls, salad bowl sets and platters. The pieces are generally a little above average in size. Most vases are 16-20 inches tall. Bowls and platters tend to be 16-20 inches in diameter. Experimenting with different woods, many coming from the North Carolina mountains, Bobby also works with exotic woods from other countries. His burl pieces are exceptionally beautiful, his expertise shining through.
