Artist Biographies: Glass
Deana Blanchard and Chuck Young
Stained glass work is a joint effort for Deana Blanchard and Chuck Young, who have also been married since 1984. Deana has been a professional glass artist since 1978, and Chuck since 1984. After moving to the mountains of North Carolina from Boulder, Colorado, Deana began doing lampworking, using Pyrex rods and a oxygen/propane torch to make small glass objects, while Chuck does metal work to create frames for large free-standing glass pieces that he and Deana design. The couple have won numerous awards, including the Mayor's Purchase Award at the Piccolo Spoleto Crafts Fair in Charleston, where their piece will be added to the Permanent Collection of the City of Charleston.
"Through collaborative design, we want to achieve pieces which convey the happiness we feel about the world and its processes. We hope that our body of work reflects the lightness, playfulness, and exuberance of life through the interplay of line, color, and light. Our wish is to fabricate pieces which will tickle the eye now and for years to come."

Gilbert Johnson
Gilbert Johnson's initial training in glass was with Dominick Labino in a workshop sponsored by the Toledo Museum of Art in 1966. His glass is "silver-veiled", produced "off-hand" (without molds), and he makes his own glass from raw materials, not commercial batch or cullet. The veiled effect in his glass is created by coating each layer with silver, then cutting and tooling it into the internal figure. The glass colors are made from metal oxides such as copper (blue/green), nickel (amber), cobalt (blue), chrome (green), and uranium (yellow).
"I prefer the color and the effect of my glass to be compatible and internal, not applied and superficial. To me, glass is a spontaneous medium that should not be labored over and worked to death."

Alicia & Beatriz Kelemen
Sisters Alicia and Beatriz Kelemen are known for their colorful, sophisticated glasswork. In 1983, the Kelemen siblings combined their backgrounds of engineering,
architecture and art and dedicated themselves to the world of art glass. Both
sisters furthered their studies of management skills and fused glass, including
traveling to the United States and Europe to obtain further knowledge in
advanced glass techniques.
Fused glass sculpture, ikebana and ceremonial Judaica comprise the focus of their work. The finest iridescent, cathedral, opalescent or other compatible glass are combined and assembled to bring out the desired optic effects. Laminated clear crystal glass is used in conjunction with compatible enamels and oxidizing substances for color. They combine solid design concepts and skills, exploring the full potential of glass as a medium.
